2020 Southern California EUC Tour

2020 Southern California EUC Tour

October 17th through the 24th

IMPORTANT

Be sure to read the details for each Tour Ride that you will be participating in. The meetup location may change for each day within 24-hours of the start.

You must participate in the dedicated Telegram group otherwise you risk missing a ride and/or coming unprepared. The link to the Telegram group is provided when you register for the Tour.

The dates are set and the locations are waiting for us. I hope you can join the 2nd annual Southern California EUC Tour. This year's Tour is sure to be bigger and better than the first. And to add some spice to the event, I will be raffling away a brand new, in the box, Veteran Sherman. Details below.

What is the Tour?

If you are reading this then I assume you are a fan of the various locations that I ride around Southern California and document on my YouTube Channel. I created the first Tour as an adjunct activity to the 2019 Los Angeles EUC Games. The Tour was a great success, with over 20 riders joining me on some of my favorite rides in the region. Great riding, great camaraderie, and the making of many new friends.

This year's Tour will consist of the same rides but the order will be different to give those of us who will be riding every day (four of us accomplished this feat last year) more appropriate rest between rides. Two of the rides will be different enough that you could consider them new.

Who is the Tour Meant For

Are you addicted to riding the EUC? Do you have a wheel with at least 1600wh battery capacity (preferably larger)? Can you ride 50-miles before breakfast and do another ride before lunch? If your answer is yes to every question, than this Tour will be the best time you'll have in 2020. If not, mark your calendar for 2021 and work on building your stamina.

I wish I could accommodate riders of all levels but that is not the goal of the Tour. My Tour is a celebration of EUC's and the rides that I like to do. If you are not yet at the level where you feel you could participate, then consider this as something to aspire to next year. Now I certainly can't (and won't) prevent anyone from joining our rides, but we can't make accommodations for beginners (instruction, periodic waiting for you to catch up, etc.). So you could always begin a ride with us and then stop when you feel you've had enough.

 Tour Registration

Please register for the Tour by completing the following form. It's just me and my little webserver so you don't have to worry about information being given away. But I really do need to know who is coming and on what days so I know what to expect for lunch, charging, etc.

When you submit the form you'll be added to a mailing list where I can send everyone updates as needed. You will also be given the private address to the dedicated Telegram group where the Tour activities will be coordinated. Please join that group.

If you make a mistake or decide later that you'll be attending different days, just resubmit the form. I'll be updating the public display of who's coming every day or so. Your e-mail will remain private to you.

If you're unsure what days you will be able to attend, leave them blank and re-register when you know more.

The Sherman Raffle

I've decided to raffle away a brand new, in the box, Veteran Sherman. Why? To spice up the Tour a little bit and to raise money for PEVRA. For the price of one or more raffle tickets you can enter the Friday drawing for the Sherman. Each ticket is $20, payable in cash and in person. You must complete at least one day of the Tour to be eligible and you must be registered. No exceptions.

Myself, Jessie Garnier, and Miles Garnier are not eligible to participate. Otherwise it's wide open and you can purchase as many tickets as you'd like.

EWheels is a sponsor of the raffle. With their help (thanks Jason) I am purchasing a Sherman at a discounted price. My hope is I sell more then enough tickets to cover the purchase price so that all extra funds will be donated to PEVRA where they can continue to advocate for the EUC cause.

You do not have to be present on the day of the drawing to win the raffle.

I hope you participate in the raffle. It's sure to be a fun and exciting time come the drawing at the Mt Baldy Lodge during our Friday lunch.

KS18XL Raffle

To take the edge off of not winning the Sherman, I will draw another raffle ticket for my personal KS18XL, pictured above. You must be present on the day of the raffle to win the 18XL.

J1772 Adapter Raffle

Rush Dougherty from www.tucsonev.com has donated a J1772 adapter to be given away during the raffle. This will allow you to charge your wheel at many car EV charging stations. You must be present to participate and win.

The Tour

Due to the uncertainties of COVID rules, our exact places of lunch and charging will probably only be known on the day of the ride. It's best to maintain an attitude of adventure and to go with the flow of the events as they unfold during the day 😎

A few of the rides will require charging at lunch if you don't have a Monster or Sherman class wheel. For those rides (identified below) we must be prepared to potentially use Uber near the end to get back to the cars. It'll really depend on how successful we are at finding recharge locations in the age of COVID. We're optimistic.

For each day of the ride, be aware of the weather forecast for the day and dress accordingly. It's highly unlikely that there will be any rain or cold weather. But you know what they say about weather. Also, bring energy food (just in case), always plenty of water, and probably sunscreen.

What do I do between rides? Fear not being bored or worried about doing touristy things. Based on last years experience, you will struggle to find time to eat and sleep.

With that said, the following is the itinerary for each day of the Tour.

Here is a map showing the meetup location for all the rides. This is dynamic and may change up to 24-hours before the ride.

Here is a Google Map that shows the route for each day of the tour. The routes are mostly accurate but there will be some changes prior to the start of the tour. Consider this a guide.

Tour Guidelines

Due to the size of our rides we will not be able to stop and wait for stragglers. I will be stopping at strategic spots to let everyone regroup. This would include whenever there may be a question as to which way we went.

To facilitate the best experience for everyone, it's strongly recommended that you be running Telegram on your phone so that you can view my live location as we proceed with the ride. So in the unlikely event that you lose track of 40 to 60 riders, you will be able to see where we are via GPS. It goes without saying that your phone should be able to last the day. Power Banks are cheap nowadays.

I also highly recommend that you load all the maps in your phone. The map above that includes all 8 rides can be loaded into Google Earth and viewed on your phone. There will be little deviation from these routes.

In combination with my live location and the ride loaded into your phone, it should be impossible for you to become separated from the ride.

Finally, Telegram will be used by me to coordinate various activities, such as when we are to regroup after lunch, etc.

The Beach

Water, sand, and bikinis

Saturday, October 17th

Well, I can't guarantee bikinis, but water and sand I can do 😊 We begin at the Pacific Palisades and travel south through Santa Monica, Venice Beach, Marina del Ray, Dockweiler beach, Hermosa Beach and arrive at Redondo Beach to enjoy lunch and some recharge. Then we continue to Palos Verdes Peninsula for some trail riding and beautiful ocean vistas. Finally we rewind the journey and travel back to Pacific Palisades.

We'll stop at all the piers (if open) and take in some picture worthy scenic outlooks over the Pacific Ocean and beaches.

This day will be a nice way to ease into the long rides during the upcoming week.

Meetup Location: Google Pin Be sure to meet at the pin (this is a very long parking lot - we are meeting at the end)
Parking: Same as the meetup location. Parking on Saturday is $9. You can probably find free parking in the adjacent neighborhoods and wheel to the meetup location.
Meetup Time: 8:00am. Plan to be rolling by ~9am
Ride Distance: 60 miles. This will be a long day (10-hours), returning to our cars in the dark.
Recharge Required: Due to the size of this ride there will be no opportunities to recharge. Bring the longest range wheel that you have. At my riding weight of ~175-pounds I can (just) complete this ride with my 1800wh MSP
Lunch: We arrive at the pier where we can park our wheels and choose from many takeout establishments in the area.
Special Considerations: Bring a flashlight for the return since it may be dark by the time we return to the parking lot.

For those of you who cannot achieve 60-miles on one charge, you have two options:

  • Join us at the meetup spot but be prepared to Uber/Lift back to the parking lot towards the end of the day
  • Meet us at the Venice Beach Pier (Google Pin). This eliminates 12-miles from the ride. We will be arriving at this location between 9:30 and 10:00. As with all the rides, my location will be updated live via our Telegram group, so you'll know exactly when we'll be showing up.

Mission Viejo

Orange County Odyssey

Sunday, October 18th

On this ride we experience some of the best paved trails in Orange County as we travel from the Saddleback Foothills to the Pacific ocean. Here we stop for some food and a bit of recharge and return by a circuitous route that includes spectacular dirt trails, climbs to vistas overlooking all of Orange County and descents into spectacular ravines. An odyssey best describes this journey.

Meetup Location: Google Pin
Parking: Meetup location
Meetup Time8:00am. Plan to be rolling by ~9am
Ride Distance: 49 miles
Recharge: None. I can complete this ride on my 1600wh wheels, but you need to know your wheel and range
Lunch: We will be stopping at Dana Point Harbor where there should be a wide selection of eateries to choose from.
Special Considerations: For those with range anxiety, you can start at this location. As with the other rides, I will be sharing our live location via Telegram and we will stop here to pick you up. Arrival will probably be between 9:30 and 10:00

Mt WilsonNuclear Escape Tunnels

Beautiful Mountain Roads with some Trail Adventure

Monday, October 19th

This is a substitute ride for Mt Wilson, which has been closed due to the recent forest fires.

This ride begins just like the Mt Baldy ride on Friday. But at the ~halfway mark we veer left and descend into the valley that separates two mountain ridges. This journey to the valley floor is perhaps the best downhill ride you will ever experience. Once at the bottom we travel along the beginnings of the San Gabriel river until we meet the trail that will take us north to visit the tunnels built in the early 1960's to allow Los Angelino's to escape a nuclear attack. Pure cold-war stuff here, and a sight to see.

Meetup Location: Google Pin
Parking: Meetup location
Meetup Time: 8:00am. Plan to be rolling by ~9am
Ride Distance: ~46 miles
Recharge: No
Lunch: After the ride we'll eat at the local In-N-Out Burger
Special Considerations: Bring water and energy food, as always for our mountain rides. There is zero cell phone coverage for 90% of this ride.

The Rivers

Tuesday, October 20th
This is a large river loop, riding along the Rio Hondo river to Long Beach where we say hi to the Queen Mary and enjoy lunch at Hooters to recharge our stomachs and our wheels. Then we return via the San Gabriel river, including many miles of riding at the bottom of the river. There is very little side trail riding this day. Mostly long stretches of perfect bicycle paths interspersed with ocean front riding and paved side trails.

Meetup Location: Google Pin
Parking: Meetup location
Meetup Time: 8:00am. Plan to be rolling by ~9am
Ride Distance: 55 miles
Recharge: No. I can (just) do this ride on my 1600wh wheels but you need to know your wheel and range.
Lunch: Lunch will be served by the welcoming staff at Hooters.
Special Considerations: For those of you with range anxiety, you will meet here and depart ~9am and ride west on Alondra Blvd until you meet the Rio Hondo River and wait for us here. This will shave ~10-miles from the ride, making this a 45-mile journey. As with the other rides, I will be sharing our live location on Telegram so you will know when to expect us.

CogswellSaddleback Mountain

Glorious Views Of Orange County

Wednesday, October 21st

This is a substitute ride for Cogswell, which has been closed due to the recent forest fires.

We start on the same Aliso Creek Bikeway from Day 2, but this time we travel east into the Santa Ana mountain range. Climbing ~4800-feet into the skies above Orange County you will be greeted with spectacular vistas to the horizon. We return via a different northern route which offers much more tree cover until we reach pavement deep in the ravine which makes for a beautiful ride back to civilization.

Meetup Location: Google Pin
Parking: Meetup location
Meetup Time: 8:00am. Plan to be rolling by ~9am
Ride Distance: 40 miles
Recharge: No. Any 1600wh wheel should easily do this ride, but you need to know your wheel
Lunch: After the ride we will eat (late lunch / early dinner) at Cook's Corner
Special Considerations: Bring plenty of water (and energy food?). When we reach the top we'll take a snack/leg break. This is our most remote ride with zero services (no food, water, and marginal cell phone coverage).

Fullerton Loop & Griffith Park

The Double-Ride Day

Thursday, October 22nd

This day will consist of two shorter rides. We start in the morning by riding the Fullerton Loop, a well known bicyclist route that loops through and around the city of Fullerton. It's a mix of paved and dirt trails, much of which is very picturesque. Although less than 15-miles, this can be a 3 hour ride.

Meetup Location: Google Pin
Parking: Meetup location
Meetup Time: 8:00am. Plan to be rolling by ~9am
Ride Distance: 13 miles
Recharge: No
Lunch: Nothing planned. You'll have to grab some fast food in order to make it to Griffith Park for the 3:00pm rollout.
Special Considerations: None

Then we regroup in the afternoon at Griffith Park for a ~25+ mile ride among the hills overlooking Los Angeles. We will visit the Griffith Observatory, Bronson Caves, and the Hollywood Sign (at Sunset). The trail riding here is spectacular and will offer you views of Los Angeles impossible to find anywhere else.

Meetup Location: Google Pin
Parking: Meetup location
Meetup Time: 2:00pm. Plan to be riding at ~3pm
Ride Distance: ~25 miles
Recharge: No
Special Considerations: Since we will be riding after Sunset, dress in layers for potentially chilly evening temperatures. Also bring some additional lighting - the ride back from the Hollywood Sign will be very dark, in the mountains. There is no cell phone coverage during much of this ride.

Mt Baldy

The Defining Mountain Road Trip and Trail Ride

Friday, October 23rd

A spectacular 'road-trip' ride. We will take the scenic Glendora Mountain Road from the base of the mountains to the town of Mt Baldy where we will enjoy a lunch at the Mt Baldy Lodge. Although the road is often open to car traffic, it is lightly traveled. Expect to have most of the road to yourselves.

This is arguably the most scenic ride in all of Southern California. I'm not aware of anyone who is not awed by the experience.

Win a Sherman or KS18XL during the raffle drawing that will occur during lunch.

Meetup Location: Google Pin
Parking: Meetup location
Meetup Time: 8:00am. Plan to be rolling by ~9am
Ride Distance: ~46 miles
Recharge: No, but there could be some recharge opportunities for a handful of riders (we can't overload the 100-year of lodge/electrical system).
Special Considerations: Except for the beginning and lunch there will be no cell phone coverage. Dress in layers since it could be chilly in the higher elevations. Bring lots of water and energy food(?)

Surprise Bonus Day
Epic Mountain Road Trip

Saturday, October 24th

If you have a Sherman or another wheel with 3100wh+ battery capacity, we will do a ~90-mile mountain loop high above Los Angeles. We start in Azusa, take the 39 for ~30-miles into the mountains until it joins Hwy 2, where we stop for a lunch break. We then continue west, climbing until we peak at 7000-feet, and then it's a downhill ride ultimately leaving the mountains at La Canada Flintridge, where we work our way back through civilization to our starting point.

Come the ride day, and depending on participation, we may be able to grab some food and charge where we leave the mountains (70-miles into the ride).

Meetup Location: Google Pin
Parking: Meetup location
Meetup Time: 8:00am. Plan to be rolling by ~9am
Ride Distance: ~90 miles
Recharge: Maybe, after ~70-miles
Special Considerations: Except for the very beginning and the last ~20-miles there will be no cell phone coverage or services. Pack plenty of water and energy food. Pack a lunch if you want to eat at our ~30-mile lunch break.

100-Mile Hwy 36/2 Loop Group Ride

Met up with six other riders at the Encanto Park in Duarte, at ~9:30 for a 10:00 depart. I didn't arrive until ~9:45 and we didn't ...
